Marine Conservation Efforts at Mobula Divers

At Mobula Divers, we don’t just talk about marine conservation—we actively work to protect and preserve the oceans and reefs we depend on. We ensure responsible diving behavior. Additionally, we collaborate with local authorities and the community to make a difference in Sibaltan and beyond.

Taking Action Against Harmful Practices

One way we contribute to marine conservation is by addressing violations of reef protection guidelines. For example, we once collaborated with the government to ban a liveaboard operator that failed to adhere to these guidelines. This ongoing effort safeguards the environment. It also ensures that only respectful operators work in the area.

In addition, we actively patrol the region and work with local authorities to prevent harmful practices. For instance, island hopping tours often ignore diving and snorkeling guidelines. Therefore, our goal is to keep Sibaltan a sanctuary for marine life. This ensures locals and tourists alike can enjoy the ocean’s beauty without compromising its health.

How Divers Can Contribute

At Mobula Divers, we believe education is key. The way divers behave underwater significantly impacts reef health. That’s why we educate every guest about responsible diving.

Tips for Responsible Diving

  • Don’t touch or disturb the reef. Corals are incredibly fragile, and even a light touch can cause damage. Avoid making contact with corals and marine life.

  • Use proper buoyancy control. Maintaining neutral buoyancy prevents unintentional kicking or brushing against the reef.

  • Keep your distance. Never swim too close to marine animals, including mantas. Maintain at least a 5-meter distance to avoid stress to animals or damage to corals.

  • Limit camera use. While capturing underwater beauty is tempting, keep your camera at a respectful distance from animals. Avoid crowding them or using a flash, as it can startle them.

    Community Support and Conservation Projects

    Collaboration with LAMAVE

For instance, we collaborate with LAMAVE (Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute) on manta ray research and protection. This partnership includes tracking their movements, studying their behavior, and identifying key areas that need stronger protection.

Through this collaboration, we contribute to a manta ray database by documenting their unique belly patterns. Consequently, scientists gain insights into their migratory patterns, population health, and other critical factors. Additionally, this enables us to advocate for expanded protected areas. This ensures sensitive marine environments get the attention they deserve.

    Join Us in Our Mission

Conservation is a team effort. We invite every diver visiting Mobula Divers to join our mission. By following our guidelines or supporting local conservation projects, your participation makes a difference. Together, we can preserve Sibaltan’s incredible marine environment for future generations to enjoy.
